The Lies told about the 800lb Gorilla

I woke up the other day and realized that in fact the OSR does exist and as long as I blog about it, it will always be around, so here you go...RANTY TIME!

Dungeons & Dragons isn't magic, WotC are not really wizards, and the fact is Hasbro owns the D&D IP. But am i going to bash WotC, 5e or Hasbro? No, I just a little bewildered over the lie, that if D&D "Fails" so does the industry.

What happens when something fails, what does it do to the industry it once thrived in? Are game designers going to be cast out into the cold heartless world, begging for scraps of food, and advertising on cardboard signs, "Will Game for Food" on every street corner in America?

No, it's a lie. If Hasbro ever decides to let D&D go the way of so many other RPG game companies, the Hobby, the Industry and Gaming will live on.

But, what do I know, right?

No, no I am not "with" any edition.
EVRERYONE knows that if D&D dies, Goodman Games could never sale another game, Pazio would fire all their employees, Fantasy Flight would release the rights to produce the Star Wars RPG, and Kevin Siembieda would shut down Palladium, finally admitting the game system he lords over truly is a crap fest. Right? RIGHT?

But wait, WotC has failed, it has, numerous times. TSR failed too! And yet gaming continued, everytime a new Edition came out people left the company for their prefered Edition, and gaming continued. Amazing I know but it's true. 3e failed, 4e was born and I stopped supporting the Company. But I wasn't the only one, Pazio left and succeded! 5e is on the horizon, and 4e uber leet fan bois, have promised to create their own OSR movement. WotC is FAILING! oh no! Lets jump ship and all join the Westboro Baptist Church!

But, if the Household name, which is on the lips of every red blooded American, D&D dies, and WotC no longer publishes it, then what will we do, I mean because, you know the D&D IP is such a common every day played game, all over the Nation, even all over the World. Without it, well No one will ever be able to produce roleplaying games ever again! You know cause EVERYONE knows D&D is a Pen and Paper roleplaying game and not a video game on my kids Wii, right?

Fact is folks, we have a small, very small piece of the entertainment industry, I mean Hasbro didn't buy WotC for its D&D IP, it was for the Magic the Gathering IP. And while we are very passionate about our silly little hobby, fact is the world would continue even if Hasbro all together imploded leaving a huge hole where the Toy King once lived.

LOL, that's funny!
WotC and D&D could announce tomorrow that they where shutting doors, and while we all would be bummed about it, Paizo will still chug along, Hells Nine Bells, it may even take the throne of the 800lb Gorilla. I will still be getting my Swords & Wizardry from the Frog Gods, I know Goblinoid Games will be sending me my new Sci Fi game, and Kevin, poor, poor Kevin will still be pumping out that horrible, horrible ruleset.

Life will go on, a new company may even rise to the forefront, and all will be right in the world.

Now,
LET ME MAKE THIS CLEAR!
I do not want the D&D IP to ever go away, nor do I want 5e, 6e or even 15e to fail, I am done with Edition Warring, but like my dislike for all rulesets created by Palladium Games, I do not want anything more to do with future projects coming out of the WotC towers.

I am happy that they have decided to let us buy old stuff again, and so I will be throwing money at 'em soon enough. But don't expect any reviews of any new Editions of D&D from me.

D&D is Dead, Long live D&D!

ERIC!

  1. Hey just thought I'd let you know about a new Swords & Wizardry SRD (online rules reference) website at http://www.d20swsrd.com (or also available via http://www.swordsNwizardry.com.) The site is based on the Complete Rules.

    Have fun!

  2. Nice rant, I would have to agree for the most part. Even if WOTC fell through for whatever reason I don't see it as an end either, there are a lot more gaming companies around to fill the gap.
