Experience for Non-Combat in light of Current Events

In light of much that has happen in recent weeks, it has struck me that perhaps another look at experience points is due. I am aware that this has been done before, but I need a table to refer to in my own games. I happen to rely less on combat in my games (yet another reason I frowned on 4e) and so I have needed to do this for a bit anyway.

I really like the Doctor Who RPG's take on non-violence and also I have always favored Palladium's XP tables. What I need is a measure of both. I also need this to be a way to reward less combatant characters and encourage the desire to find alternate ways to overcome goals. Encouraging thought and problem solving should be encourage, more so with my kids at the age they are playing in games now.

I like the idea of xp for good roleplaying and using creative ideas to overcome obstacles. Avoiding unnecessary violence should be encouraged even when one may be playing a class that is more combatant than cerebral. Team work, and reasonable plains and execution of those plans as well as unique non-violent solutions to problems that may seem to be geared towards violence.

Perhaps as a Gamemaster I need to design more roleplay opportunities, puzzles and such to encourage this kind of play.

Self sacrifice, courage and morality should be rewarded as well as helping others in this kind of play.

All in all I think it should be just as important to the game session as fighting the good fight against the forces of darkness.

What are ya'lls thoughts?

  1. I would have to agree completely on rewarding more creative solutions to situations, whether during battle or not. My kids aren't quite old enough yet to really play, but when they are I would go more for finding creative and sometimes non-violent ways to get around things.
