When Heroes Fail...

Call me naive, ridiculous or pathetic, but I have set certain folks in the OSR community up on a pedestal. It's hero worship pure and simple, and these folks attain a certain amount of celebrity in my eyes. Even the @$$hat bloggers and forum trolls have attained a certain amount of respect in my eyes.

So when one of my heroes stumbles, I'm quick to defend or even want to help out. But I think that's where I have to draw a line. I know we are all human and we pretty much screw up on a daily basis, Hell's Nine Bells, I can't even complete project I have started. But then again I didn't crowd source Ganth and well, the only thing my readers invest is their time, and while I can't refund them that, I would hope that if I was such a bad blogger they would just shrug their shoulders and move on to better blogs.

I have looked up to members of this community for years now and even attribute one member as the reason I started this blog.
" I would like to say if it wasn't for the last year or so of reading James Maliszewski's awesome blog Grognardia I would never have thought to try and accomplish this task. If you have never read his blog go there now, forget my pathetic start up blog and check out his awesome campaign setting Dwimmermount. "
Hah, I quoted myself, Any way...

I'm a little upset, no I didn't dump any money into James' project but I was gonna purchase it, and now I don't think their is a blog or forum that has alot of good to say about the man or his project. Sure most folks are at least even handed in their general disappointment but all in all at least I get the feeling, James has been knocked down from his throne.

Did he ever want to be on a throne? Naw, I don't think so. I sure he was just writing about something he loved and got involved in something a little over his head. Which is why maybe I shouldn't get so invested in hero worship like I do. No I'm not devastated by the current situation going on, I'm just embarrassed for the guy and a little bummed out. Not like my cat died. When Joe the Cat died I cried like a little girl. I ain't shed a single tear for James.

It went around the bloggo-verse a bit, "Who was gonna fill James' shoes?", well why the piss do we need a "leader" or "That one blog"? What makes any of us better than any other? Because you have published your Heartbreaker and I haven't? Horse Puck.

We are all different, play our games different and still can't seem to grasp the real differences between ascending and descending AC. So why do we need that one guy and or gal?

Gygax and Arneson are dead, the founders didn't leave anyone in charge and the kingdom is in chaos. Sounds like an awesome campaign.

ERIC!

  1. Well, Tim over at The Other Side blog was mostly tongue-in-cheek with his suggestion that his blog take over for Grognardia. As for Grognardia, I too was deeply inspired by James' content. His was one of my first OSR blogs, along with Jeff's Gameblog, Gothridge Manor, the late Underdark Gazette, and a couple others. I really miss the energy of James' posts from a year ago and older.

I know he is probably heartbroken about his father's increasingly ill health, but just a moment or two to update his followers would go a long long way to alleviate things. Look, even if his absence is more than just a symptom of grief, it would still behoove him to check in. I mean, what if he's just burnt out by the RPG thing? Yeah, that would suck, but at least it would end all the speculation.

I reflect on the probable demise of blogs I follow and I get a bit down. I mean, things can't last forever, but still...it will be a sad day if and when James hangs it up. I've been down about Dreams of Mythic Fantasy being almost defunct, and Jeff's Gameblog being so silent...
