and it looks like we are in it for the Wealth and Power. And a little late I know, I know...anyway.
This has got me thinking and I have had alot of good advice. I am thinking that I like the idea of my castle/fort/keep being a "cork" bottling up the hordes of evil that dwell in the depths of my megadungeon. However, I also like the idea that the keep/fort/castle has been over ridden by some low level baddies.
What I have mulled over for a bit is that the keep/castle or fort, whatever it's gonna be was at one time a beach head, used to delve the dungeon because it is believed that the dungeon is a more direct route through a massive impassable mountain range.
Uncover this route, would bring in vast wealth to the Domain, plus the accolades and benefits deserved to the explores that discover the route.
Several hundred years ago this is what was being done, the keep, or whatever, was a stronghold and base of operations for an order of knighthood. This knighthood now long since gone discovered that the dungeon was overran with all kinds of baddies, over the years the knights where able to bottle up much of the big baddies, jump ahead to present time, and you have a forgotten legend, lots of rumors and a castle currently waiting to be reclaimed by the Domain.
Of course the characters have a choice here, and I think it could be sandboxed pretty well, they could work for the Duke of the Domain and discover the trade route, or they could claim the keep for themselves. They could explore every inch, stumble across the ancient prisons the old Knights set up and release the big baddies, or defeat them all. Alot could be done
I am also thinking the Dungeon will be more horizontal in design than vertical, as it passes under a Mountain range. Sure parts may descend or ascend in places but a vast majority would be horizontal.
I am thinking of using a few resources I own too! I have the Dungeon Alphebet book, the old Central Castings Dungeon book and the old 2e Dungeon Builders guide, I think all three will be of huge help, Crap I forgot I also own the 1e Dungeoneer's Survival guide! (Funny thing, Google chrome wanted me to correct "Dungeoneer's" to scrounger's...HAH!)
Anyway I think I may draw up a solid entrance this week and post it.
