Late, sorry for that, still one broken PC and trying to do what I can from work.
So here we are, it was during the height of 2e that I got excited about a new game being pushed out from the TSR guys, Alternity.
Alternity was exciting, her was going to be the Other half of roleplaying, all my modern and sci fi RPGing rolled up in one generic system.
Why is it, that a Generic System like this never really takes off?
Sure, sure the big generic systems are out their but Alternity was being built by the Big Dogs.
At the time I felt that Alternity was going to be this HUGE success, I bought up alot of the core material, was buying all the Dragon magazines with Alternity articles, especially the Star Frontiers article, I even bought the Gamma World Alternity game....
But get this, I ran one game, I have owned Alternity for decades and I have only ran it once...
Nobody wanted it.
Rifts, Ninjas and Superspies, Heroes Unlimited, these are the games besides D&D folks where into.
Folks were playing Gurps too, why do you need Alternity when you had Gurps, and plus that Alternity had weird rules.
Now the books sit on my shelf, I have tried selling them, trading them, why does nobody love this game?
I do, I really like it, I love the rules, the standard setting was great and I had so many ideas I wanted to explore.
But now we have Fate, and Savage Worlds, and Gurps is still chugging along, so no need for this old unsupported game.
I don't have the time to give old Alternity a look at anymore, the OSR has provided much of what I woulf have done with Alternity.
Mutant Future, Stars Without Number, Gore, all these cover what I was once going to do with Alternity.
It's dead, truly dead....oh I know it has a community on the internet, small but strong, and folks still pluck away at it, but it's just not gonna happen for me.
Here's to Alternity the Greatest game I never really got to love.
